Hopefully you’ve taken the time to read this ARFcom post linked a few days ago by Uncle. I probably would have skipped over it except Robb Allen took the time to email it to me saying that the post hit some of the same points I’m always making.
No one wakes up in the morning one day and decides to become an armed robber. It is a gradual process that requires some experience and desensitizing. Before a man will pick up a gun and threaten to kill people who have done him no harm in order to get their usually meager possessions he has to get comfortable with some things.
He has to get used to seeing others as objects for him to exploit. He has to accept he may be killed while robbing. He has to accept the felony conviction for Robbery will haunt him all his life. He has to accept he may need to kill a completely innocent person to get away with his crime.
This is a process that starts with stealing candy at the corner store as a child. It progresses through bigger property crimes that may also involve violence. But one day G gets tired of selling his stolen property for nothing and decides it would be better to steal cash. Cut out all that tiresome sales stuff.
Keep in mind many petty thieves, auto burglars, residential and commercial burglars, paper thieves, and hustlers will get to that point and decide not to become armed robbers. Most will. It is a special group of outliers who decide threatening to kill people for a few dollars is the way to go.
Once a man starts armed robbing he has crossed a line most won't. Don't forget that when you are looking these bastards in the eye. Their decision to kill you is already made. Your life means nothing to him. Only his does. His sole motivation for not killing you is he doesn't want a murder case. He has already accepted he may pick one up though.

Read the whole thing. The post is mostly about how to deal with this sort of criminal, but it is VERY important that you read and understand the part I’ve linked above. These are the words of a very experienced police officer and detective. He’s seen them, he’s talked to them. He knows what he’s talking about.
Why do I keep harping on this? The simple fact is that even criminals have personal limits. Most criminals do not want to be in a position where they might have to kill you. Most would be happiest avoiding you entirely. That’s the reason that we have so many daytime burglaries. They rightly assume that most people are at work, and not going to get in the way. Most criminals don’t want to kill you.
So if most criminals would be perfectly happy to avoid killing you, why is it that the gun grabbers are always accusing you and me of wanting to kill people? Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that honest people usually stay honest and crooks usually stay crooked. People who kill are rarely people who have no criminal record, and almost never people who have no violent history.
You’d think that the gun grabbers could grasp that simple concept, but apparently they can’t.
I would strongly recommend you pick up a copy of Inside the Criminal Mind, and maybe also The Myth of the Out of Character Crime, both by Dr. Stanton E. Samenow. They are both depressing. They both pretty much beat you over the head with the fact that everything you think about crime and criminals is wrong. If you think that criminals are like you and me, you’re wrong. If you think that the things that motivate you and me to improve ourselves will work on criminals, you’re wrong. Criminals don’t think like us, they don’t act like us, and they certainly don’t care at all about us.
