NY Times finds widespread criminal behavior among NC Concealed Handgun Permit holders

(NOTE: This post has been updated since I posted it last night. I rushed it out near midnight, and I’ve since rewritten most of it)

Out of “more than 240,000” CHPs, they found

·         More than 2,400 permit holders were convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, excluding traffic-related crimes
·         More than 200 were convicted of felonies, including at least 10 who committed murder or manslaughter.
·         More than 200 permit holders were also convicted of gun- or weapon-related felonies or misdemeanors, including roughly 60 who committed weapon-related assaults.
·         Nearly 900 permit holders were convicted of drunken driving

In short, they found that approximately 1% of all CHP holders were convicted of something, but that “something” is almost exclusively minor misdemeanor crimes. So basically all they have is 10 murder/manslaughter cases out of more than 240,000 CHP holders.

Let’s be honest. I don’t give a crap about misdemeanors unless they are violent. I’m not going to sweat minor, non-violent offenses. I am not really concerned with drunk driving either, at least not as it relates to guns. They will get their 3 year ban on CHP and that’s all there is to it. What irritates me is the way the NY Times uses minor crimes to bump up the numbers. 2,400 sounds like a lot of people. What they don’t seem to want to tell us is what happened to the other 1,100 (minimum) people. Were they convicted of trespass? How many were convicted of stupid crimes, like Felony theft of pine straw?

Now we know what the latest attack on concealed carry is. The powers that be in New York have decided that no one shall be allowed to carry a gun up there. Damn the Constitution, damn common sense, no one gets to carry. They’ve drummed up a “study” that “proves” that CHP holders are criminals in large numbers. They just “forget” to tell you that the vast majority of the crimes are minor and non-violent.

Here’s what I want to see. I want a complete list of all 2,400 plus CHP holders and the crimes they are said to have been convicted of. Let us see the raw data so that we can make a judgment. Let us see the actual names so we can see if the ones convicted are the same ones who had CHPs. If you read my blog, you know that I post “Felons Behaving Badly” stories every day. I reject many stories because the names are fairly common and I can’t be sure that they are the same names as the ones in the DOC database. I’d like to make sure that “John Smith” who got convicted of manslaughter is the same “John Smith” who had a CHP.

Everybody should contact the author and politely ask for the underlying data. If you get it, email it to me.

  1. So, out of 240,000 CHP holders, exactly 8 used a gun to commit a murder or manslaughter??? What is that, like .03%? Seriously, I think there are bigger things to worry about than ten people in a 5 year span killing someone. How's about them 200 dead mexicans and Brian Terry for example?

  2. Not only that, but this was a NAME search. How many people have the name Jason Washington? John Smith? If one guy named John Smith commits murder, that makes 100s of matches to CCW holders.

Don’t be more of an ass than me. Your words, though they are on my blog, are your own. I didn’t write them. If they are stupid, ill considered, or bigoted, it’s your problem.

Criminal threats will be reported to the appropriate authorities for the appropriate action.
