Huge increase in NC Concealed Handgun Permits

Each year the State Bureau of Investigation releases their Concealed Handgun Permit data. They recently released the info for the year. Unfortunately the SBI doesn’t have previous year data, they just post the updated info on the same web page. Luckily I have referred to the numbers before and I wrote down a few of them.

As of 6-30-2010, the SBI reported 195,553 active permits statewide. The latest data, 6-30-2011, shows a total of 228,072 active CHPs statewide, an increase of 32,519. This is more than a 16.6% increase in Concealed Handgun Permits statewide in only one year. Wake County had 12,826 CHPs, and now has 15,372, or 2,546 more than last year, a staggering 19.85% increase.

North Carolinians against Gun Violence would have you believe that all those new concealed carriers running around with guns would lead to an increase in violence. Somehow I haven’t noticed it.

  1. Well, since your State has over 9 million, that tells me about 2.5% of the Total Population (rough numbers) has a CCW Permit. But if you knock off about 2 million (underage, convicted Felons, etc.), that goes up to 3.2% of the Legal Adult Population has permits. So 1 out of 30 Adults at the Mall could be legally Armed at any given time. Yet, where are the Massive Pools of Blood?

    Wish Ohio had your numbers.

  2. @Bubblehead Les: good point. Last I looked, the DOC website showed 1.5% of the NC population in jail, on probation, or on post release supervision. I'll look up some numbers tonight to see if I can get a better estimation of the total percentages.

  3. You got Instapundit-ed! You go, Sean!

Here in Mississippi, guns are just guns. If you don't have at least one, you are on faculty at Ole Miss, or have taken the last job you can find at Mississippi State.

We have a new truck-- a FORD F150 4x4, i.e., not a GovMotors-- and I took it to the local guy for an oil change. Some question about the filter... where is the owner's manual? "In the console, under the gun." He chuckled, and said, "Thanks."

See how easy this is? Not counting what Clay & his crew were carrying, or had in their trucks, I had in my possession, and was responsible for, two .357 magnums. John's-- the one in the truck- is a 6-shooter. Mine-- in my sack sitting beside me in-- chambers 5, and I've got a speed loader. Technically speaking, I don't even need a permit to carry (although I have one). In Mississippi my home, my vehicle, my place of business (unless my business is disallowed, like a campus) falls under my domain.

It's not big deal to have a gun here. That's as it should be.

  4. You might want to try the internet wayback archive. It may have the old data. I just tried it and it had crawled the page a few times.
