Violence tends to be starkly limited to certain groups of people. Most of us will not tolerate violent behavior, not in ourselves nor in our friends. That self selection limits our contact with the sort of people who would harm us. It does not eliminate the risk, but it certainly lowers it.
So what happened here?
According to the story, 4 guys broke in to a house demanding money, shot the occupant, and ran.
Hmm. Long and violent history, drugs, sounds like he associated with a bad crowd.
Do you think? Many home invasions are raids on recreational pharmacists. Sounds like this one was as well.
