Some of you have to be asking yourself, why is CSGV doing what they are doing? Sure, many of you are content with the explanation that CSGV opposes guns, so that motivates their animus towards us. What is more interesting than their attacks is their underlying motivations.
On the recommendation of Kurt Hoffman, I picked up a copy of what amounts to the CSGV manifesto, Guns, Democracy, and the Insurrectionist Idea. Don’t worry, though. Also at the recommendation of Kurt, I used interlibrary loan. That way none of my money ends up in the hands of CSGV. It was a tough read, mostly because it was incoherent. What leaps out right up front is this quote
CSGV rather loosely defines “insurrectionism” as the belief that anyone should be allowed to have any gun anywhere. (Here’s video of a historian slapping Josh Horowitz around for his silly definition) What they really mean is that most of us believe
In their quote above, CSGV gives away their game. CSGV isn’t interested in guns and gun ownership per se, they are concerned with the idea that people like us might tell people like them to leave us alone, and we might use our guns to enforce that demand. CSGV’s leadership wants to remake the US into a Communist Socialist Democrat Progressive country. They fear that we may not be interested in their Communist Socialist Democrat Progressive message, and we might even shoot at them when they come and demand that we get onboard. We’ve all been told by wild eyed gun rights fanatics that gun control is just one of the steps in imposing Communism. We all laughed and ignored that warning. Now read that CSGV quote again. Not so silly anymore, is it?
Be sure to read Kurt Hoffman’s original book review in three parts
Know your enemy. Learn what motivates these guys, or you’ll be fighting the wrong battle. We’re focusing on the guns. They’re focusing on advancing Communism Socialism Democrat Progressivism. They have a plan. It’s up to us to thwart that plan.
Very interesting observations. Sounds like CSGV might be the opposite side of the same coin that GOA is on.
ReplyDeleteOne is a progressive/socialist group that uses gun control as a rallying cry and a means to an end. The other is a Republican front group attempting to use gun rights as a wedge issue to further their personal agenda.
Great work!
Yup. It's about power. They want power, because without it how could they enforce their "progressive" utopia? They can't hold power over those who truly believe in autonomy and individual liberty AND have the means to defend those beliefs by force should it come down to that.
ReplyDeleteEven progressives understand that power flows from the barrel of a gun. That's why "progressives" thoroughout history have disarmed people.
@Weer'd: If I've seen further that others it's because I've stood on the shoulders of a guy in a wheelchair and repeated what he (Kurt) said. I'm glad he read the book, otherwise I'd have never known what motivates them.
ReplyDelete@MikeW: It's even deeper than that. When you have decided to rely on yourself, you've had to dispense with the pretty illusions that the State will protect you. If they would, you wouldn't have to carry a gun. Sure, you could, if you had to, fight back against a oppressive state. What really scares them is that you have rejected the whole premise. You are attempting to deal with the State as equals, rather than as a child to a parent. Each person infected with the belief that they are autonomous citizens instead of wards of the state is another person they will have to kill before they can be in charge.
Sean--thanks very much for the links and the kind words. Really, though, you're giving me far too much credit.
ReplyDelete@Kurt: well, at least no one can call you a Cassandra now.

I love that people read what I write. Passing on credit to those who thought of it first will never diminish that for me. On the contrary, I'd feel embarrassed had I failed to acknowlege that it was you that found this book, read this book, and told me why it was important. You just did it more than 6 months before CSGV publicly beclowned themselves.
